Canal+ is launching a new fiction channel in Pulaar/Fulfulde called “PULAAGU”.
The French streaming giant Canal+ has launched a new channel called “Pulaagu”. A channel offering series in Pulaar/Fulfulde, highlighting the customs and traditions of the Fulbe with cult, recent, and unpublished series filmed in natural settings in Senegal, Mali, Mauritania, and Guinea.
Speaking during the opening ceremony, Cheikh Sarr, general director of Canal + Senegal, returned to the context in which the said channel was launched. “It’s part of the proximity approach that we have with our subscribers on the African continent. If you remember, we started by launching a channel of African series, which broadcast in French, which was called A Plus. Subsequently, we launched a channel in the Wolof language, here in Senegal, but at the same time as we launched a Wolof channel in Senegal, we also launched channels in different languages on the African continent, and today, we are back with a channel in the Puular language, called Pulaagu, which will interest a certain number of countries, including Senegal, Guinea, Mali, Mauritania, and many other countries up until Cameroon. And we are very happy today to bring this Plus to the production ecosystem,” he said.
With the arrival of the PULAAGU channel, the CANAL+ Group reaffirms its commitment to bringing together the best talents in the audiovisual industry to offer quality series to its viewers on the African continent. This personalized channel meets the expectations of subscribers belonging to the Fulbe community, representing nearly 50 million people in Africa. Let us remember Pulaar/Fulfulde is a language spoken in around twenty states in West and Central Africa — Mauritania, Senegal, Mali, Guinea, Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria, Gambia, Chad, Sierra Leone, Benin, Guinea -Bissau, Sudan, Central African Republic, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, and Cameroon.
To the question why the Pulaar/Fulfulde language? Mr. Sarr replied: “because it is extremely important for us to participate in the development of the ecosystem, in the monetization of the value chain, and therefore production. And we have seen the impact it has had on the languages in which we have already launched channels, and we are thrilled to bring this same type of impact to the Pulaar language, and its ecosystem.”
